Being a butler is more than a profession, it is a calling. The stylish perfection of his service, which affords him great satisfaction, remains to this day the epitome of assured courteousness performed at the highest level.

Sensitivity, ability, team spirit and leadership qualities, coupled with constant pleasure in giving service and a desire to learn more, are the hallmarks of excellent staff. My many years of experience were gained in private households in Britain and Continental Europe. For the last few years I have devoted myself to training staff in the hotel industry. Mostly this consists of on-the-job training which has two distinct advantages: firstly, staff can continue with their daily work routine during training and secondly, shadowing staff allows me to improve their guest-care skills using practical examples. This approach is more persuasive than classroom theory and increases the effectiveness of a training session. A vital element in preparing a course of training is a visit to a hotel beforehand in order to assess the style of an establishment and the current standard of guest-care services. This allows me to tender precise proposals to management.
